Now that we’ve discussed the top ingredients to watch out for in our cupboards, laundry room and cleaning cabinet, what’s next? If you missed my last post on the top chemicals of concern in our homes, find it here. Be sure to read to the bottom of the post and grab my cheat sheet to print or Pin for later.
Now let’s talk about some of my favorite healthy home swaps. I recently did a Facebook Live where I showed a few of them. Check that out below:
I want to help you decrease the chemicals in your homes. Here’s a super quick review of why we need to make better choices:
-
Components of plastic, BPA and DHEP, can leach and have been linked to prostate and breast cancer, reproductive failure, obesity, heart disease, diabetes and behavioral problems.
-
Detectable levels of BPA have been found in 95% of the U.S. adult population.
-
Enough plastic is thrown away each year to circle the earth four times.
-
Here are some of the potential toxic effects of the chemicals in cleaning products: carcinogens (cancer-causing), mutagens, adverse genetic, reproductive or nervous system effects; systemic or internal organ damage; asthma causing, and allergens.
-
Just 7% of cleaning products were found to adequately disclose their ingredients in one study.
-
On average, the air inside our homes is 2 to 5 times more toxic than the air outside.
-
We have been unknowingly bringing over 80,000 chemicals into our homes. Only a small portion of these have been tested and manufacturers are allowed to keep 20% of their ingredients secret.
Is that enough to inspire you to make some changes? Here are some of my favorite swaps.
Clean Laundry
-
biokleen Free & Clear Laundry Powder– this is the laundry detergent we have been using for years and love.
-
Dryer balls– these soften your clothes, reduce drying time and reduce static cling. They are wool balls that you just leave in your dryer. Some people even add a 1-3 drops of their favorite essential oil to the ball to get that nice fresh scent.
-
For a pre-treater: Biokleen All-Purpose Spray & Wipe Cleaner.
Cleaning Cabinet
-
Biokleen All-Purpose Spray & Wipe Cleaner-this is my favorite all-purpose cleaner. As you can see above, you can also use it for a stain pre-treater.
-
ecloth-I love these microfiber cloths for cleaning.
-
Seventh Generation Toilet Bowl Cleaner
-
Sun and Earth Liguid Dishwashing
-
Seventh Generation Automatic Dishwasher Powder
-
California Baby Calendula Handwash
Clean Cupboards
-
We love our stainless steel plates, and bowls. They are lightweight and unbreakable. They’re dishwasher safe and very kid friendly.
-
Tumblers-these are the perfect size for kids.
-
Xtrema Ceramic Pots and Pans: These are the pans we use the most. These ceramic pots and pans are non-reactive, stick-resistant, and can be used in the oven, stovetop and freezer. They also have bakeware. They are dishwasher safe and easy to clean. I have used a steel pad on occasion and the food easily comes off.
-
Rubbermaid Glass Food Storage Containers
-
FridgeX silicone food storage containers: These are made of non-toxic non-reactive materials that are smell and stain-resistant. They can also be used in the freezer-a great option for batch cooking! They are safe in the microwave, oven and dishwasher too!
-
Planetbox-We have had these lunch boxes for years now and they are holding up great. They keep all the food in there separate compartments. They are made from stainless steel.
-
Insulated water bottles-these water bottles from Klean Kanteen are my favorites. They do a great job at keeping your water cold. They are made from stainless steel, are easy to clean, durable and don’t leach. Quick note-the insulated bottles are supposed to be hand washed. If you want to be able to put them in the dishwasher, get the non-insulated bottles. They just don’t keep your liquid as cold.
