Top 10 Superfoods to add to Your Smoothies

April 18, 2018

I may receive commissions from purchases made through links in this article. Full Disclosure

I love my smoothies.  They are such a great way to get in a ton of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients in the morning.
There are several go-to superfoods that I use in my smoothies again and again.  I’ll go over what each superfood is good for, then follow-up with some recipes.

Top 10 Superfoods to add to Your Smoothies

1. Cilantro

This is the go-to for heavy metal detox.  It is antibacterial, balances blood glucose levels, and supports the adrenals.

2. Sprouts & microgreens

These are baby vegetables which makes them extremely easy to digest and assimilate.  They are full of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. They help rebalance hormones, are inexpensive and easy to grow at home.  It is estimated that there are up to 100 times more beneficial enzymes in sprouts than in raw vegetables.  There are many choices of what to sprout: mung beans, radish sprouts, red clover sprouts, alfalfa, broccoli, and lentils.  You can also buy sprouts at most grocery stores.

3. Spirulina

This has been called the most nutritionally complete of all foods.  It is the richest food in beta-carotene. It is also rich in iron, magnesium, and trace minerals, all of which are common deficiencies.  The iron in spirulina is easier to absorb than if you take iron supplements. It is also rich in protein. It is an immune-booster, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and anti-cancer.  It increases stamina and curbs hunger. It is a great detoxifier and studies have shown it to remove toxins from the body.  According to Medical Medium, Hawaiian spirulina is the most potent and highly recommended type.

4. Maca root

This root is considered an adaptogen- which means it helps the body naturally adapt to stressors.  It is rich in antioxidants (which means it helps fight off disease and prevent damage to cells.) It also enhances energy, mood, memory,  balances estrogen levels, and boosts male fertility.  Start with 1T. In the morning, then work up to 2-3 T.

5. Wild blueberries

They are rich in antioxidants, are one of the most effective heavy metal detoxing foods, they are great for brain function, digestion, immune system, and they cleanse the liver and blood.

6. Papaya

Papaya is excellent for digestion as it contains digestive enzymes.  Not only does it soothe the digestive tract, remove toxins, and decrease inflammation, it is also great for skin/hair/nails and eyes.  Make sure to buy the large Maradol papayas as they are not GMO. You can also eat the seeds, they are anti-parasitic.  Just throw a Tablespoon of them in your smoothie.

7. Ginger

This is a potent anti-inflammatory, which makes it a natural painkiller. It is immune-boosting, antioxidant, and anti-fungal. It’s a natural remedy for nausea.

8. Turmeric

Turmeric is famous for curcumin which has anti-inflammatory properties. It also boosts skin health and enhances blood circulation.

9. Kale

Kale is anti-inflammatory, as well as a powerful antioxidant.  It helps to remove toxins and eliminate them from your body.  It is anti-cancer and great for eyes.

10. Spinach

Spinach helps protect against cancer, is anti-inflammatory, boosts immunity, and is also great for eyes.  It’s great for bone health, skin, helps with detoxification, can slow the aging process, and is a high source of magnesium.
