Just imagine these 2 different scenarios for a second…..
Scenario 1: You wake up to your alarm, hit snooze because you’re exhausted from the day before. You’re scrambling to drop your kids at school and don’t have time to make their lunches or eat any breakfast yourself, coffee it is. At work, between your project and scrolling Facebook in your downtime, you never relax and your body stays in the stress response mode.
You grab an afternoon snack of a muffin and another coffee which leads to a crash later in the day where you have no energy left. You manage to throw something together for dinner, but you’re too exhausted for any quality time with your family.
After being stressed all day, your spouse wants to talk and you lose it on him because you have nothing left to give. Instead, you go find the ice cream and end up binge-eating to make yourself feel better, but you only end up feeling worse. You crash into bed late after bingeing on Netflix to zone out. (Feel free to personalize this and add in insomnia, or anxiety, and sprinkle on some negative self-talk).
Scenario 2: You wake up well-rested without an alarm. You have a smoothie made from the day before and your kiddos packed their own lunches the previous night. Your kid is screaming because he can’t find his favorite shirt, but it doesn’t phase you. You handle it calmly and get everyone out the door on time and get to work feeling energized and ready for the day.
Over lunch, you have a great conversation with your coworker. Just before your presentation, you get mustard on your blouse. Instead of the swear words, and the “why now? why me? I knew something would happen to mess this up” you clean it up as best you can, and make a joke about it to lighten the mood during your big proposal.
You get home and are excited to see your family. Dinner is ready in the crockpot. Even though kiddo #1 refuses to eat what you have worked so hard on to prepare, instead of telling him how ungrateful he is and that kids are starving in this world!, you calmly tell him that this is what’s for dinner and if he tries some and still dislikes it, he can make himself some popcorn.
Then you have to run 3 different places after dinner for 3 kids and instead of lamenting your unfortunate status as the family Uber driver you relish the time alone to listen to a podcast. After you get home your spouse vents about his difficult manager and you have the patience to listen to him without rolling your eyes once or going on about how he should get a new job. You skip the TV because you still have time and energy for some quality time with your hubby after you tuck the kids in.
You go to bed grateful and ready for tomorrow.
Unfortunately, scenario 1 happens more often than you would believe…..it’s not that busy moms haven’t heard about some of the tools I use in my program, like meditation or visualization. It’s that they haven’t had a strategy or support and this is the reason they haven’t seen success with those tools, even with so many self-help books, podcasts, and blogs out there.
Fact is: Talking to dozens of other moms, they have tried meditation or know they “should” but haven’t made the time, or watched The Secret, were super inspired but had no real step-by-step guidance or support. The inspiration is short-lived as they quickly forgot all about it as life just kept happening to them and they continued to put out fires and react to life as it kept coming at them so fast. They continue to be chronically stressed out, collapsing into bed at night exhausted, drinking wine every night to relax, and not able to give 100% to any of their relationships because they haven’t given it to themselves first.
Obviously, this is the last thing that you want to have happen. You are excited, you start reading a self-help book, try a practice for a while, then don’t see any results, get discouraged, and end up even more frustrated and feel trapped in a vicious cycle.
Especially during this time when women are expected to be all things: sexy, successful, caregivers, and all-around fabulous wives, mothers, and friends. Our parents were of a different generation and taught us to be one way, society and media are telling us to be something else. We are trying to be everything to everyone and end up frustrated and exhausted.
Fortunately, there’s a scientifically-based process you can use to handle stress with ease, have healthy self-talk and ensure your subconscious isn’t sabotaging you at every turn.
This way you will have more joy, confidence, peace, and better relationships than you’ve ever had before……no matter what life throws at you, you will be ready for it and will be able to move through it without it taking you out and being in control.
The scientific method I’m referring to is called the Bliss Method. And it’s nothing like a traditional therapy session or diet/health plan. Scientifically….the reason why the Bliss Method works so well for busy moms is that it looks at our programming and re-programs it.
Your mind is like a computer. Everything that happens in your life gets downloaded onto your hard drive. You look at life on your computer screen. Everything you see is filtered through your hard drive. The hard drive is our subconscious. So the only way we will see things is through the filter of our past experiences (hard-drive). In order to have something different show up on our computer screen, we need to re-program the hard-drive or our subconscious. The first step to changing this cycle is awareness. You take your power back when you are making life happen instead of reacting to life happening to you.
First, you need to identify your significant past experiences. For example, I had a story on my hard-drive of not being good enoughthat goes way back. One incident I remember in elementary school was someone writing “nobody likes you” on a piece of my artwork. That got downloaded on my hard drive so every new event that got filtered through my hard-drive and projected onto my screen went through that lens.
When I tried out for basketball I heard “you’re not good enough, nobody likes you.” When it came time for prom my little voice said: “you’re not good enough, nobody likes you.” And on and on. Once you’re aware that these old stories are running the show, you take back your power and change the story.
That re-programs your hard-drive so that new experiences get don’t get filtered through that old story, they get filtered through the new story that you choose.
The next thing to be aware of is your limiting beliefs. These are tricky because most of the time, we aren’t aware of them, but they are definitely running the show.
An easy one to spot is people’s limiting beliefs around money. Let’s say growing up that your parents were extremely frugal, scoffed at people who had money as frivolous and wasteful. They told you that you had to work hard for your money and that it’s bad to want more money. Now subconsciously, you carry these same beliefs around.
You see someone driving a Range Rover and think “how wasteful, just think of what they could buy with all that money.” Now, you can’t attract abundance if subconsciously you think that wanting more is bad.
Again, once we identify these limiting beliefs and re-write them, you get to change them to whatever you want. “Money is the root of all good!”
Another area of focus is emotional awareness. So many times us moms get stuck trying to solve our problems in the physical body. “I’ll eat healthier, I’ll exercise more, I’ll stop binge-eating, I’ll (fill-in-the-blank) and then I’ll be happy, or then my anxiety will go away, or my insomnia will be cured”…….And as we try thing after thing and nothing is the “magic pill”, we get extremely frustrated.
While focusing all of our energy on the physical body we have completely ignored the emotional body. Your emotional body is made up of all your past, present, and future emotional experiences. Whenever we have an experience, it generates feelings that are based on past similar experiences, then we have a thought about that feeling and that thought influences how we respond to experiences at the moment.
So that anxiety isn’t just a one-time thing. If you have anxiety you know that every time you drive on the highway (or whatever your particular trigger is) that anxious feeling is coming back automatically…..unless you do something about it. When there is excess baggage, thoughts generate emotional stress that can affect the physical body. When our emotional states are balanced our physical bodies will be healthier.
So, the outcome for you is that when a stressful situation comes up you automatically respond in a way that will be positive for you in the long-term. Instead of the fight or flight response being activated you will be calmer and be able to respond to your spouse from a loving place instead of knee-jerk reaction, and you will be healthier as your digestion and immune systems won’t be moved to the back burner, as happens in our automatic stress-response.
